Headlight Restorations
Welcome to the first edition of our Eco Wash Hawaii Detailing blog! Today we will discuss why headlights deteriorate, how to restore them, and proper maintenance for long term clarity. Unlike many other headlight restoration services, after we've restored clarity we hand apply a special UV clear coat to provide long term protection from the suns rays and guarantee them for 1 year. Today's headlights are manufactured using Polycarbonate plastic as mandated by Dept of Transportation. This plastic is specifically chosen because of its impact resistance, and low cost replacement in comparison to older style glass lenses. The unfortunate downfall to this type of plastic is that is has no natural protection from Ultra-Violet light, so over the course of time and depending on how much sunlight hits the headlights, they will eventually yellow and form small cracks which will affect how much light can pass through the lenses and onto the road. Auto manufacturers apply a special coating to prevent UV degradation, but under Hawaii's intense sunlight and UV bombardment, they stand little chance of staying clear without proper maintenance. There are many ways to clear up the yellowing from UV degradation, that’s the easy part – the hard part is to keep them clear, which we will discuss later. For the DIY auto detailer, there are many DIY kits for sale at local auto parts stores, or Walmart. We’ve heard of people using toothpaste, and all types of “hacks” as posted on popular Youtube videos. But as professionals, we employ a few different steps to restore your faded lenses depending on their condition. Our process will include some or all of the following steps: Wet sanding, Compounding, Polishing, and re-coating. Essentially, all you need to do to remove the yellowing is to abrade it off using sandpapers of varying grits, and compounds and polishes to get them sparkling clear. In the first video we demonstrate a 3 stage wet sanding process, then a UV clear coating application. The second video we demonstrate how to restore headlights without sanding, just by using a polisher and compound, then a UV clear coating to protect. So now that we’ve discussed how to clear up your headlights, we will discuss protecting them.. which is the most crucial step. Many other detailing services and DIY kits will get your headlights clear, virtually brand new, however they rarely ever apply a UV clear coat in order to keep them nice and clear. Without this crucial coating, your headlights will start to degrade under our Hawaiian sun within weeks. We are proud to say that we include a hand applied UV clear coat to every set of restored headlights, and guarantee them to stay clear for 1 year, or we will re-do the service at no charge. Our headlight restoration services start at $25-40 per light depending on their condition. For DIY’s you can protect your headlights in many different ways. The hardest way is to apply a wax or sealant to the headlights every 2-4 weeks depending on how much sunlight makes contact with your lenses. I recommend that DIY’s purchase Opti-Lens manufactuered by Optimum Polymer Tech. You can purchase this product at Pakshack in Sand Island, Honolulu. You may need to apply multiple coats of Opti-lens to get longterm protection and durability.
